journey by bike on Francis of Assisi way greccio

Via di Francesco - St Francis' Way - Southern Way from Roma to Assisi

Stage 4A - Alternative route - from Rieti to Greccio

Once you get to Rieti you can start the detour of the Southern Way that goes through Terni over the Rieti-Greccio route.

This leg of the Southern Way cycling route goes from Rieti to the Franciscan sanctuary of Greccio and is the beginning of a detour from the Way that goes by Terni. Although it is a short ride, it is nonetheless difficult because of the ascent to Greccio

This leg goes from Rieti to the Sanctuary of St Francis at Greccio, it is the beginning of the detour along the Southern Way that goes through Terni and then meets up with the main route again at Arrone. It is a very short leg great for relaxing a bit after the first few days in the saddle and in view of tomorrow’s far more arduous stretch.
Short though it may be, it cannot be seen as an easy day of riding because there is a six kilometer ascent at the end that leads to Greccio. Leave the centre of Rieti and drive safely over the rather busy streets, especially at the crossing with the Via Salaria. Once out of town the roads are nice and peaceful, the only cars you’ll encounter are the locals going about their day’s tasks.
After passing Contigliano you will reach Spinacceto, where you turn left to begin the ascent to Greccio. It is a relatively steep ascent so make sure you make good use of your gears. The views are beautiful over the entire Holy Valley of Rieti. Once you get to Greccio you will have almost accomplished your task and before the final uphill to the sanctuary you can catch your breath over a short downhill stretch.
What you should know before departure
Sources
There are sources of water at Rieti, where you will be able to get a supply of water for the leg of the journey, Contigliano and Greccio. The leg of the journey is short but in the summer, we advise you to travel with two water bottles or a water reservoir.
Intermediate stages
This leg is short so no intermediate stops are considered. If you would like to you can stop for a break at Contigliano or Spinacceto to rest a bit before facing the uphill stretch to Greccio.
Suggestions
The day’s route is not long and the only real difficulty is the ascent to Greccio. Take it with easy gears so that you don’t tire yourself too much, tomorrow you will need all your strength. Don't forget to take a small food supply with you (fruit, dried fruit, chocolate, energy bars, mineral salts if it's very hot).
