The second leg of the Southern Way goes from Monterotondo through the Roman countryside past Montelibretti to Ponticelli. It is not a long haul, only about 30 km, but the cumulative climb of just under 1,000 metres makes it a sometimes arduous task that requires careful energy management.Once you are out of Monterotondo you head along the hills of the Roman countryside, surrounded by fields and pastures, without any special difficulty. This early stretch is an easy one, a warm up. Before you get to Montelibretti, the scenario changes and the fields give way to vast expanses of fruit trees. This is where the first real uphill begins, and after a short downhill, another one takes you towards Pitirolo. From there you go downhill again, towards Nosteria di Nerola, and then up again to Poggio Corses before you finally reach Ponticelli and get off your bike near the Orsini Castle.
