This leg goes from Rieti to the Sanctuary of St Francis at Greccio, it is the beginning of the detour along the Southern Way that goes through Terni and then meets up with the main route again at Arrone. It is a very short leg great for relaxing a bit after the first few days in the saddle and in view of tomorrow’s far more arduous stretch.Short though it may be, it cannot be seen as an easy day of riding because there is a six kilometer ascent at the end that leads to Greccio. Leave the centre of Rieti and drive safely over the rather busy streets, especially at the crossing with the Via Salaria. Once out of town the roads are nice and peaceful, the only cars you’ll encounter are the locals going about their day’s tasks. After passing Contigliano you will reach Spinacceto, where you turn left to begin the ascent to Greccio. It is a relatively steep ascent so make sure you make good use of your gears. The views are beautiful over the entire Holy Valley of Rieti. Once you get to Greccio you will have almost accomplished your task and before the final uphill to the sanctuary you can catch your breath over a short downhill stretch.
