Eighth Centenary of the Death of Saint Francis of Assisi
In Assisi, from April 4 to November 22, a wide programme of events celebrates the Eighth Centenary of the Death of Saint Francis of Assisi, involving the city and surrounding areas through cultural, artistic and spiritual initiatives.
The programme opens on April 4 with the official inauguration ceremony, launching a year of continuous events across all seasons. Key initiatives include Commemorative Coins (01/04–31/12), the exhibition “Franciscus. Brother in Art” (24/04–04/10), the family festival “Francis for Children” (25/04–31/12), and numerous cultural and educational projects.
In May, activities such as The May of Books (07/05–31/05) and Assisi Embroidery Project (22/05–31/05) take place, followed by theatrical performances, cultural walks and musical events in late spring and early summer. During the summer, highlights include the Canticle of the Creatures photography exhibition (20/06) and the musical festival Brother Sun and Sister Moon (01/06–30/06).
From August to September, the programme expands with initiatives focused on Franciscan heritage and landscape, including DeMusicAssisi (02/08–15/08) and Rivotorto Franciscan Paths (14/08–23/08). Autumn events include the Festival of Creatures (09/10–11/10) and the international conference Franciscus gloriosus (15/10–17/10).
The programme concludes in November with the World Day of the Poor (14/11–15/11) and the San Francesco Marathon (22/11), offering a widespread cultural itinerary across urban, historical and natural locations.
