Sculpture Speaks Louder Than Words 2026
From 21 February to 24 May, in Spoleto, on the second floor of Palazzo Collicola, the solo exhibition “Sculpture Speaks Louder Than Words” by Barry Flanagan, curated by Jo Melvin, is on view. The exhibition presents a selection of works that trace the British artist’s research, from early experiments with materials such as sand, rope, fabric, plaster and clay to later figurative sculptures in bronze.
Trained at St. Martins School of Art in London in the 1960s, Flanagan explored the relationship between sculpture, sound and silence, approaching matter as a sensory experience. His early works, often made with unconventional materials, reflect the experimental climate of the time and show affinities with Minimalism and Arte Povera.
From the late 1970s he also worked with stone and bronze, developing the animal figures that would become central to his work, especially the hares.
The exhibition highlights how Flanagan saw sculpture as a way to connect art and society, creating works that engage with space and viewers.
