You have reached the last leg of the Southern Way cycle route. It will take you from Trevi to the Basilica di San Francesco, the final destination of your long ride to the City of St Francis. It is not an especially hard ride, with the exception of a few up and downhill stretches and the final ascent to Assisi, which is usually faced with the enthusiasm of those who see their goal in front of them, just a few kilometres away.
Not only, but from a technical point of view, there are no steep slopes. Just a few kilometres of downhill gliding after having left Trevi will put you back on the Assisi-Spoleto cycle route headed towards Foligno. After a few more kilometres you will leave the route and follow a series of secondary roads to get to Foligno, where you will arrive without having to deal with much traffic.
Once you are in town, however, drive carefully and try to stay on the network of cycle paths. Once past the centre of Foligno the itinerary follows the same one covered by those walking the route and will take you to the charming town of Spello, whose origins date to Roman times. From here you head to Assisi riding over the Via degli Ulivi, a narrow road that runs along the slopes of Mt. Subasio, right through the vast expanse of olive trees that gave the road its name. The ascent to the town of Assisi begins at San Vitale and is not especially daunting, suitable for all kinds of legs, even those tired from long days of pedalling. Once in Assisi enjoy the lovely historical centre before concluding your journey at the magnificent Basilica of St Francis.
What you should know before departure
Sources
There are sources of water at Trevi, where you will be able to get a supply of water for the leg of the journey, Foligno, Spello and Assisi. The leg of the journey is not long but almost entirely under the sun, so in the summer we advise you to travel with two water bottles or a water reservoir.
Intermediate stages
This is the last leg and the desire to reach your goal will guide you along the way, so there are no intermediate legs in the programme. Enjoy the lovely route and take a few breaks to see the historical centres of Foligno and then Spello.
Suggestions
The day’s journey is not hard, so just enjoy the cycling and the knowledge that soon you will have reached your destination. There are a few up and downhill stretches between Spello and Assisi, and we suggest you make use of the gears to save your strength for the final ascent to the centre of Assisi. Don't forget to take a small food supply with you (fruit, dried fruit, chocolate, energy bars, mineral salts if it's very hot).
