The fifth leg of the Southern Way goes from Piediluco to Scheggino and is the first stretch entirely within Umbria. There is only one uphill stretch, at the very start of the day, so let your body rest a bit after the hard work of the previous days.
The route begins at the centre of Piediluco, along the shoreline. After about 2 km of flat cycling you’ll find the only ascent of the day, a 4 kilometre stretch that leads to Forca D’Arrone, where we suggest you take a break to enjoy the magnificent views from this vantage point.
After a downhill run you will cycle through the town of Arrone and then turn right to start going up the Nera River valley, along the Greenway of the river, an alternating sequence of dirt and paved roads with very little traffic. As you follow the river bed, surrounded by lush green nature, you will reach the midway point of the day, Ferentillo, a great place to take some time out. When you’re rested, head to Scheggino, a route that involves a few short but steep uphill stretches before you get to this little town, perched on a slope and one of the Valnerina’s most characteristic.
What you should know before departure
Sources
There are sources of water at Piediluco, where you will be able to get a supply of water for the leg of the journey, Arrone, Ferentillo and Scheggino. The Valnerina valley is a cool territory rich in water, so you should not have any problems getting a supply of water, in the summer, we advise you to travel with two water bottles or a water reservoir.
Intermediate stages
The route is not especially difficult and is a chance to rest your body after the strenuous efforts of the past few days. You should not need any halfway points to split the leg into two, but a stop in to visit Arrone and/or Ferentillo is a good idea.
Suggestions
There is only one climb, the one up to Forca di Arrone, early on when your legs are still fresh. Along the Valnerina there are a few ascents, but although they are steep, they are short. Take them slowly so that your muscles don’t harden too much, tomorrow is another day of riding. Make sure you take time to enjoy the beauty of the Valnerina’s nature and towns. Remember to always have a small supply of food with you (fruit, dried fruit, chocolate, energy bars, something energy-giving in general).
